K-9 Unit

The Department's first Canine (K-9) Unit was developed through the support of the Quincy Exchange Club and the Illinois State Police.  Our first K-9 was a German Shepard breed named "Jake".

Officer Darin Kent and "Max"

The department's current K-9 is "Max".  He  joined the department in the fall of 2002.  His handler is Officer Darin Kent.   "Max" is a Belgian Malinois (pronounced MAL-in-wah), which is one of the varieties of the Belgian  Shepherd Dog.  "Max" is trained in drug search, tracking, crowd control and has additionally been trained  as a cadaver dog.  Darin and "Max" have been very  successful, almost from the first day they hit the streets, in helping locate illegal drugs and escaped suspects that have led to several arrests.

If you would like to know more about the Malinois breed, check out this web site address.       http://www.breedclub.org/ABMC.htm
